Book Review:  By The River Piedra I Sat Down And Wept ~By Shreya Chakravarty An excerpt from the preface says: “And with love, there are no rules. Some may try to control their emotions, and develop strategies for   their behavior; others may turn to reading books of advice from “experts” on relationships – but this is   all folly. The heart decides and what it decides is all that really matters.” Pilar, 29 years of age, lives in a very small village in Spain in 1993. She’s still a student, has had a number of lovers, and wishes to find the right man and marry, but still carries the torch for a childhood friend who left the village some 15 years earlier. There is little to no hope in her that he will ever return, but she is shocked to get a letter from him telling her about a lecture he is to give in Madrid – he asks, will she come to hear it. Puzzled, a bit hopeful, yet cautious, she decides to go to Madrid. This is a love story for sure, but much more. At one level it is a story of t

Salvador Dali and Surrealism ~By Shreya Chakravarty At the mention of the word surrealism, the name that often comes to mind Salvador Dali. Salvador Dali’s life’s work centers on the use of surrealism to express himself in what we might call an unusual way. Dali remains one of the most controversial and paradoxical artists of the 20th century. Dali broke all conventions both in life and with his art as he was fascinated by the theoretical work of the great Sigmund Freud, who shaped the world of psychoanalysis. Freud stated that the human brain can be said to be in two parts, the un-conscious and the conscious. Dali appears in the portraits painted by Suzi Nassif as well. Therefore, it became Dali’s belief that Freud discovered that the human mind is full of secret codes hidden in drawings, waiting to be psycho-analyzed. Upon the use of this method realized dreams and imaginations hidden in his un-conscious mind and through it gave the world a different perspective of art works. By usin

Movie Review: Eternal Sunshine Of Spotless Mind ~By Shreya Chakravarty                       Valentine’s Day, 2004. A man named Joel heads out to work—then, realizing that he’s miserable, changes his mind and goes to Montauk. It’s freezing cold and snowing—it’s February in New York—but he decides to walk the beach anyway so that he can write in his journal and mope in peace. “Sand is overrated,” he thinks at one point, idly picking at his wet surroundings. “It’s just tiny little rocks.” On the beach, Joel sees a woman with blue hair, in an orange hoodie. He sees her again at a nearby diner, where he catches her spiking her coffee. He sees her again on the train platform headed back home—she playfully tries to get his attention—and again on the train itself, where she introduces herself as Clementine, defensively accosting him for not even knowing how to make fun of her name, the way everyone else apparently has. “Why do I fall in love with every woman I see who shows me the least bit o
